Count words, characters, and reading time in real time. With smart character limits for the platforms you actually use.
Start typing or paste any text into the box above. Counts update live. Reading and speaking times adjust automatically as you type, based on the speed you've selected. When your text approaches the character limit for a platform like X (Twitter), LinkedIn, or SMS, a small chip appears with the usage. Want to see all limits at once? Click "Show all platform limits".
Most word counters online are slow, ad-stuffed, and miss what people actually need. This one runs entirely in your browser, so it's instant and your text never leaves your device. It also includes things competitors miss: smart platform character limits, reading level analysis, unique word counts, customizable reading speeds, a goal tracker for essays, and keyword density for SEO.
Words are counted by detecting groups of non-whitespace characters that contain at least one letter or number, which matches how Microsoft Word and Google Docs count. Sentences are detected by punctuation followed by a space or line break. Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by blank lines. Reading time uses your selected words-per-minute, and speaking time uses 130 wpm (a standard average for spoken pace).
Reading level uses the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level formula, a widely-used readability metric that estimates the U.S. school grade level needed to understand the text. Lower scores mean easier reading. As a rough guide: under 6 is easy reading, 6-9 is plain English suitable for most adults, 9-13 is standard, and above 13 is college-level or technical writing. Needs at least 10 words and one sentence to calculate.
Does my text get sent anywhere? No. Everything runs locally in your browser. There's no server, no upload, no tracking of what you write.
Why does my count differ slightly from Microsoft Word? Most counts will match exactly. Tiny differences can happen with unusual punctuation, special symbols, or hyphenated phrases. For 99% of writing, the count is identical.
What does the density percentage mean? In the word frequency analysis, density is the percentage of total words made up by that word. Useful for SEO writers checking keyword usage, or anyone wanting to see if they're overusing certain words.
Does it work offline? Yes. Once the page is loaded, you can use it without an internet connection.
